For those X-Pyr followers, those who know these impresive mountains, and others who haven't had the chance to see them, here you have a few notes of interest about this chain of mountains born a mere 84 million years ago.

The Navarra side of the Pyrenees

Back then, a shallow sea separated the Iberian peninsula from the rest of Europe, until the african continent started pushing over the european one allowing the spanish plate to overlap over a european plate which was sinking under the pressure. This is the reason why it is easy to find fossils from that sea in the limestone bedrock at 2000m of height, although is is also possible to find rocks with the most diverse origins, even volcanic, such as the Girona area and also in Larrún or Navarra, or Anayet and Ossau in Huesca. Later on, the glacial erosion mainly but also the water and the wind working for millions of years created the landscape you can see today. On the high ground the glaciers created beautiful valleys with flat floors and meadows scattered with evergreen forests, but lower down the water eroded the limestone creating narrow gorges or rocky canyons hundreds of meters deep with rivers that flow through them and swell when the ice melts in the spring or the summer storms bring torrencial downpours.

Thanks to these environmental agents, to its special climate, its high rainfall, the microclimates in the valleys, its flora and fauna with unique species only found here and thanks also to a very peculiar human geography, we have the oportunity to enjoy some of the most beautiful mountains in the planet.
