INTERVIEW

What is your greatest sporting success?
2nd boardairline series 2009, 1st varus flatlands 2010, 1st state championship NRW 2010, 2nd bordairline series 2012, 24th redbull X-Alps 2013, 2nd XC Cup performance class 2013, 1st XC Cup performance class 2014, 1st state championship NRW 2014, 6th Mosel Open 2014 Overall, 21th x-pyr 2014, 2nd bordairline Kössen 2015.

When and why did you start paragliding?
Since my childhood I have been dreaming of engineless aircraft. Thus I built dozens of model airplanes and kites. In the 90th I observed paragliders. I really felt appeal to paraglide. With my first flight in 2002 paragliding became my passion. It is always fascinating for me to fly hundreds kilometres with a piece of cloth. There is nothing more beautiful than to paraglide over unknown lands that you have decided to conquer.

What is your mountaineering experience?
Hike & fly particularly in the german, austrian and italian alps. Some mountain climbing to about 3.500m.

What does your typical training week consist of?
Running about 80km per week. Being in the air to practise a feeling for thermals. Some mountain-biking and swimming. Stretching and strength training in the evening.

What are your best and worst sporting memories?
best: climbing the mountain in the night to fly into the sunrise; x-pyr 2014.

worst: 2007, after 33 hours of adventure race I finished in 2nd place just 400m behind Helmut Eichholzer, 2009 I had a deja vú and after 33 hours I finished 2nd just 200m behind the winner; x-pyr 2014.

Why did you choose X-Pyr?
I am very pleased to participate the x-pyr once again. I love the wonderfull landscape of the pyrenees alps. And I am fascinated about that kind of paragliding competition. For me it’s the truest competition. No facilities. Just me and my glider. Feel the nature and become a part of it.

Have you participated on X-Pyr before?
Yes, 2014. And I am still angry that I had to stop the race.

Have you flown in the Pyrenees before?
Yes, few times in the spanish pyrenees.

What will your strategy be during the race?
As much flying as possible. As much hiking as necessary. But first of all I will keep my own pace throughout the race.

What excites you most about X-Pyr?
The x-pyr is tailored to my person. The x-pyr is not just a paragliding or mountain run competition. Rather it requires strategy to take the right decisions. And above all it is a extreme challenge for the body and mind. My paragliding and endurance sport experience in the alps allows me to apply for this race. This year I am looking forward to participate with my austrian and slowenien fellows.

What scares you the most about the event?
To have technical problems with my vario on a top XC day during the cross country flight. And after 2014 to fly with hunger and thirst.

Why will he make a good assistant?
I know Pedro since around 2007. His flying performance is excellent. He is calm and always in good mood, but above all purposefully.

Anything else you like to comment?
I wish the other athletes a good preparation and all the best for this fascinating adventure race. And thank you in advance Team x-pyr 2016.
