What is your greatest sporting success?
Paragliding related, the solo crossing of the Alps from France to Slovenia as well as breaking the New England XC record in the United States. Regarding sports in general, winning the New England mountain bike championship as well as obtaining a second degree black belt in Kung Fu.
When and why did you start paragliding?
Like most pilots, I’ve had the desire to fly since I can remember, although I started six years ago when I was practicing hang gliding. I saw this person get out of a tiny car, pull out a backpack, hike up the hill, pull out a piece of fabric (wing), fly down, pack up and leave in his tiny car! That moment opened my mind to countless possibilities to see the world from a very different and certainly privileged perspective.
What is your mountaineering experience?
Hiking through the French, Swiss, Austrian and Slovenian Alps as well as around the area I currently live in (New England) and back in my home town (Monterrey, Mexico).
What does your typical training week consist of?
Fly as much as possible while doing a combination of exercises to increase strength, endurance and agility, prepared by a professional coach. These include various disciplines such as CrossFit, biking, XC skiing, speed walks, running, hiking and martial arts.
What are your best and worst sporting memories?
Best: Landing near the coast after breaking the New England XC record after flying through very challenging airspace and in turbulent conditions.
Worst: Being close to meet my maker twice while riding dirt bikes. The first one after a bad jump which sent me flying to the edge of a precipice. The second after riding far away from civilization and running out of water and food (with vultures flying overhead). Needless to say, I no longer ride dirt bikes.
Why did you choose X-Pyr?
It is a new adventure which will test not only our physical abilities and stamina, but also our capacity for planning and adaptation.
Have you participated on X-Pyr before?
This is my first time participating in the X-Pyr.
Have you flown in the Pyrenees before?
This will be my first year flying in the Pyrenees.
What will your strategy be during the race?
Take advantage of the weather conditions, whatever these may be, by having a solid ground game and certainly a strong performance in the air.
What excites you most about X-Pyr?
The competition and the wonderful sights.
What scares you the most about the event?
Not enjoying the event (due to sickness, etc.).
Why will he make a good assistant?
Hector is very passionate about paragliding and a good friend. He enjoys organization in general (he’s been Meet Director in several competitions) and he is an excellent strategist. In addition, he’s always in a good mood and filled with positive energy.
Anything else you like to comment?
Congratulations to the organizers, we are sure this event will be a huge success! Game on!
